RE: Heating with no Electricity??????

Unfortunately for me my battery box is welded in place and there is no room to put a second battery. I guess I could hook up 2nd one when we get to the site.

Heating with no Electricity??????

We are planning a trip to the mountains of Virginia this November to Big Meadows. We have a 33' TT and a Honda generator, so we are OK from 4PM to 9PM during generator hours, but what do you do overnight? I have been married for 17 years so no comments about snuggling; it ain't happening. Seriously, what do you do to keep warm?

RE: Thoughts on transmisson temp

I tow a Rockwood 8315SS with a F350 Turbo diesel. I too monitor temps. I run 180 on flat roads, or less. In mountains of Virginia I get up to 200 plus or minus a few. If I ran your temps I would look into bigger cooler. Although 220 just for a little while is not really a problem, temps are the main cuase of tranny failures, so cool it down a bit for longer life. RE: clear screen door

I used the adhesive that came with the Velcro. My strip is about 1/2" wide, which actually was a 1" strip cut with a razor knife down middle. I also ordered the clear slide as previous post said, works great.

RE: clear screen door

I made my own. Buy untinted plexiglass from local hardware. Cut to match shape of door very carefully, leaving about 1/2" overhang from screen to hardsurface Using white velcro, place this in the overhang space on cut plexiglass. Place opposite side of velcro onto previously attached velcro. Peel back off of this velcro and carefully place in desired position. If comfortable with placement, press hard all the way around for good seal.
I have received MANY compliments and have others do this as well. It is removeable to use screen, or cover to have full view and run A/C. Only disadvantagfe is plexiglass cannot be tinted, so I have been told.

RE: How Many nights or weekends............

It looks like most are still camping, but maybe the trips are a little closer to home. It certainly is the case for us. We have not been out but 15 nights this year, but had to cancel a few dyue to medical reasons. Matter of fact I am supose to be camping this weekend, but the 16 year old dog is not doing well.

How Many nights or weekends............

The DW and I have been discussing the use of our RV. So for those that do not full time, and husband and wife work, how many trips do you take. You can total it by total nights, or weekends. Give us all a chance to judge how our own use compares to average.

RE: Front Hitch Question

I finally purchased the Bodiak and am very pleased. Had it installed within 20 minutes. Fog lights still visible and came with a place to mount license plate to keep it viewable. It has 8000 lb pull capacity whih is not really an issue since I purchased it for hauling bicycles.

RE: Just put down deposit on new 2008 Rockwood 8319SS

Towed a 29' with a Ford F150. Used weight distribution and truck leveld OK. However the trailer was the boss and it had more sway than I felt comfotable with. Purchased Dual Cam Sway control and that helped quite a bit. It can be done, bit it could be better. We bought an F350 deisel because we pull in mountains a lot and now the truck is the boss and I do not know it is back there.
As for length, we only camp in state parks and always specify how long our trailer is (now have Rockwood 8315SS) and have only had on time it was an issue.
IMO: Get Reese Dual Cam sway/weight distruibution immediately!
Learn what to do if you encounter sway
Drive slow
Always tell campgrounds your length when reserving
Consider upgrading truck IF possible and you plan on camping alot
Best of luck, and remember the only good camping trip is the one you return home safely from!

RE: State Parks and sewer hookups

We used to stay at the "resort" or "private" campgounds for the full hookup because my wife is kinda spolied. Well once we were invited to a Virginia state park and we were converted! They do not have sewer hookup but have a dump station. The Virginia parks are some of the cleanest and nicest you could ask for, and the price cannot be beat. Usually sites are shaded (neat that this time of year) and somwhat private. The amenities are endless, with hiking, mountain biking, a lake or river nearby, and plenty of firewood. WOuld I rather have sewer on site? Of course, but they cannot offer that and keep cost low. ANd as for trucks coming around, I would not use that do to potential damage. So lets let the park rangers cocentrate on cleanlinest and amenities, and if a few stay away that is OK by me, that way I can have a site. Unfortunately they Virginia parks are ususally full and can be hard to get into, so I do not think anyone is staying away! JMO

RE: Va beach Holiday Trav L Park directions

If you use US460 east off of 295(exit 3b) and get on I64 west, east of Suffolk you can avoid going through any tunnels and it's only a few miles further to I264. As stated in an earlier thread, the traffic at the I64/I264 interchange can be pretty bad in the afternoon.
Ramzfam is right. Take this route and avoid the headaches of traffic. Height restrictions will not matter. I live in the area and refuse to take the tunnels at anytime except in emergencies and between midnight and 0500. I use the Suffolk route every time going to Va Beach.

RE: Shenandoah National Park

Stayed at Big Meadows twice this year. It is one of our favorite campgrounds. I would suggest Dark Hollow Falls for the waterfall as previously mentioned. As for view from mountain at highest peak, go to either Upper or Lower Hawksbill. If you are in for a strenuos hike, you may try Lewis falls, but it is about a 3 hour hike. You can go to many websites that are devoted to hiking and gives descriptions of the trails. Best of luck!

RE: Walker BTM 21470 muffler

No the difference is only noticeable to people outside. However when cruising wth windows down below 30, you can hear the whistle sound when accelerating. Not loud, just different. That is why people think I have chipped my truck. With windows up, or at interstate speeds, your wife will hear nothing any different from before.

RE: Nervous about diesels

Personally I would stay away from the '04 6.0. I cannot tell you how many people told me to only consider a 7.3L when I told them that I was looking for a used PSD. As a matter of fact, there was a recent post on this forum about an 04 PSD 6.0 horror story. Search for it and read it all.

RE: Walker BTM 21470 muffler

I have it on a 2003 7.3L F350. I was worried about the noise as well. It does change the noise slightly, though at the speed you mentioned, there is no increase inside cap. I am quite often told that I must have chipped my truck due to its sound, but I have only done the BTM and the AES Ford intake. I would describe the noise as a little more whine or whistle to it, maybe due to the increased air flow.

Want to Feel Better...Check See My Bad Luck

My family has really hit a string of bad luck resulting in the cancellation of numerous trips this year. First the rear end went out in my wife's Ford Expy so we got that fixed and traded it in on a Honda Civic for better mpg. Came home and next morning car had flat. Got that repaired. Soon to follow I developed a kidney stone that was stuck in top of urethra. 2 weeks of litho and many ER trips. Coming home from on of the Dr visits a lady hit our new Civic in rear and pushed us into car in front of us at stop light. $9000 dollars damage! So we get rental car. 2 days later, rental is in garage and a shelve falls and hood of rental is damaged. While this was happening my wife and son developed strept throat. So to relax I go on my computer to see what my fellow campers are doing and my PC crashes. Hours of work and I get that going again. Next day I go to cut grass and the spindle bearing on my John Deere goes bad and my Stihl blower will not start. Really, I am not kidding on this stuff!!!4 days ago we hear a funny noisy in the den, only to find water dripping thru ceiling due to clogged drain line on AC unit. And today I sit home with my 16 year old dog who had a softball size tumor removed from his hind quarter.
So relax and enjoy your camping, because someone else is having it a little worse. The sad thing is, I know someone out there is having it even worse than me. Be thankful we are here and make the best of it.

RE: Using a Bed Slider

I was looking at the Bedslider and the Joey Bed. I checked my local Craigslist and found a Joey Bed that someone was selling for $300. Lucky for me it fit my truck, and it works great. I am tickled I bought one, and cheap. I used to put my firewood on back and it made the rest of the bed unusable as I too have camper shell. Now the firewood goes to the back and the Joey Bed pulls out as if npthing is on it. My advice, check Craigslist, then if you cannot find one, bite it and get a new one. Joey Bed holds a little more if my memory serves me. Warning though, you will have to spend some time putting this together, which fortunatly I avoided since it was already being used.
If interest send me an email and I will get you a few pictures.

RE: Tow Vehicle Nightmare- First Long Distance Trip

I drive a FORD F350 PSD with the 7.3L diesel. I was told when I was looking to stay away from any 6.o diesel as they are prone tp problems. That was the best advice I was given on my search for that famous sooty power!
